Why You Should Keep Working After You Have Kids

There is nothing like the decision to make once you have children as to whether you keep working. Most Dad’s aren’t asked whether they plan to continue to work after they become parents, but Mum’s? Well, the rules are a little different, unfair as it may be. Mothers are expected to be at home with their babies, and if they aren’t, they’re judged extensively for it.

Work and family life do not need to be conflicted, though, and no parent – Dad or Mum – should be judged for choosing to be at home or be at work. Finding part time jobs for Mums is hard enough without any stigma for saying yes and choosing to support your family. If you want to keep working when you’ve had a baby, the best thing that you can do is know why you should go for it (other than the fact you want to!). Here are some of the reasons that you should go for it.

You will have something for you

So many parents end up so consumed by their home and children, that they leave themselves behind. If you want to have something more, something other than your children, a job is a perfect thing for you to have. One day, the kids are going to grow up and leave the house – and where does that leave you? You need something else and a job can be the thing that you make yours.

Your relationship will be better

When you have something to talk about beyond the kids, your relationship is going to be stronger than ever. There are studies to show that two working partners that have more to communicate about are happier and healthier. There’s less resentment, less upset and both are equally financially responsible.

You keep your independence

When you have a job, you then have responsibility for some of the bills in the house. You also have your own money. One of the most dangerous things that you can do is be financially reliant on someone else, especially when you may be unsure as to whether your relationship will go the distance.

Your kids will grow seeing you achieve

There is nothing wrong with being at home with your children, but it’s always a good thing for children to witness your work ethic and see you achieve. You will spend time going to work and they will spend time seeing the results of your efforts. This is a good thing.

You can secure your future

When you have a second job, you can get the things that you want faster than ever before. Securing your earnings for your future is going to help you to get the things that you want the most.

When it comes down to it, your career is going to be good for you. You get to take the time for yourself and make something of your interests, and it’s all because you chose to work around your kids and for your future.
