One question I got asked many times is how to create a website on your own. Actually, creating a website it’s not so difficult as it sounds 😀 So, I want to guide you in three basic steps that I implement myself to create a brand new website!
STEP 1: CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLATFORM
To create a website you will need a website building platform. Basically is what the finished website looks like “behind the scenes”. Good news is that you don’t need coding knowledge, so you just have to choose the right platform who can offer what you’re looking for. Some example of building platform are WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, Shopify,
TOP TIP: Choose a platform who can offer you a completely responsive website, you want you audience to be able to access the website from any device.
STEP 2: GET A DOMAIN & WEB HOSTING
Great, once you’ve chosen which platform you want to use to build your website you’ll need a domain name and a web hosting. A domain name will be the name that appears in the URL of the web browser (www.yourcompanyname.co.uk). Owning a domain name looks much more professional and you can use it to track and see your customers’ behaviour. To choose your domain name you can use the name of your company or even your name if you’re a freelance and prices are really affordable.
Then it’s time to chose a web hosting platform, which is the platform that connect your site to the internet, basically what you can see if you type your website URL. For myself I use Siteground and I highly recommend them as their customer support is great, with real time chat and very helpful people.
STEP 3: SET UP & CUSTOMISE YOUR SITE
Now you’re ready to set up and create your brand new website!! In the case you choose WordPress, from the control panel of your account click the “wordpress” or “website” icon, choose the domain where you want to install your website and click “install”. Your website should be now live and ready to be customise. To access it and start the customisation, in a new tab type https://yoursite.com/wp-admin (replace “yoursite” with your domain) and you’re now in the WordPress dashboard. From here you can change the theme, add/delete pages, create blog post, install plugins and much more.
TOP TIP: Remember to back-up the website before you do any considerable changes! In the case something goes wrong you don’t want to loose it.
